A turtle was walking along a forest path when he noticed another turtle stuck in a muddy ditch.
He paused. He could have carried on. After all, it wasn’t his ditch, and he was already late.
Instead, he climbed down into the mud. Together they pushed until the younger turtle was free.
As they rested, the younger turtle asked, “What made you stop?”
The old turtle smiled. “I don’t really know.”
“Was it kindness? Compassion? Duty?”
“Perhaps. But whenever I help because I think I should, it feels like an obligation.”
“So why did you stop today?”
The old turtle looked back at the muddy ditch.
“It didn’t feel like a decision. Walking on simply didn’t feel right.”
They sat in silence for a while.
Perhaps that’s where caring begins. Not when we decide to help, but when another’s path no longer feels entirely separate from our own.
