The trouble with weighing scales

Illustration of two turtles on a weighing scale, one holding a basket of vegetables, the other hugging a baby turtle

Imagine two turtles standing on a weighing scale.

One says, “I carried you three times this week.”
The other replies, “Yes, but I listened to you cry for two hours yesterday.”

Absurd, right?

And yet, don’t many of us carry invisible scales into relationships?

Who gave more.
Who sacrificed more.
Who needed more.

But life rarely moves in symmetry.

A mother gives milk, care, and protection.
A baby gives nothing we would call “equal.”

And yet something profound flows both ways:
love, meaning, tenderness, transformation.

Perhaps interdependence was never about equal exchange.

Maybe it is not a balance sheet.

Maybe it is simply life meeting life.

Some connections are not meant to be measured.

They are meant to be lived.

Where do you notice yourself keeping score? I’d love to hear.
